Introducing culture in language teaching

Introducing culture in language teaching seems a rather obvious. At the moment we are able to learn a language, we are also able to immerse in their culture.
But, what do we mean by culture? The word culture means history, geography, science, literature ... Also values, norms, lifestyles and heritage of a society. To experience other cultures, first we must know our own. Another important thing to do is forget all the prejudices we could have and open our minds to the unknown.

Currently, learning languages like English, seems us so basic that we don't even think about it. Parents worry about their children professional future, from very little, and want them to learn a second or third language (in our case). In early education, introducing culture in language learning is not unreasonable. I remember celebrating Halloween, St. Patrick's Day, painting Easter eggs and even sing some carols.

It is possible that in other educational contexts such as academies or schools, sometimes forget learning culture. In my opinion, we must promote the learning of culture through a fun and modern methodology that really comes close to the reality of the community. A good example, as I think, it would be listening to music, watching movies or reading novels that made reference to that particular culture and to the language we want to learn. Playing games is also an interesting method to get attention and arouse curiosity in children: competitions or quizes, traditional games, etc.

In conclusion, learning languages and learning culture is, in my opinion, something we can not separate and it's easier as we think. Language is culture and culture is language.

METHODOLOGY

Teacher will show the Power Point of the fruits. Children must be paying attention about the fruits and their characteristics: form, colour… It could be interesting that the children try to speak about fruits and what they already know about them in English. It would be a great chance for them to lose their fear to foreign languages and a nice experience to show their resources.

Then, the teacher will show a video with a song about fruits and they also have to sing with the teacher. It maybe would be difficult to do in a 45 min session but it would be interesting. The teacher has brought to the classroom different types of fruit and with all the things they have learned about fruits, they have to do a fruits salad. The teacher, obviously, would help them, specially cutting the fruits.

Finally, they could eat the salad and, if they remember it, sing the song.

The key of this activity is that if they can touch and see what they have learn, in this case, the fruits, the knowledge will be useful for them and they will probably don’t forget about it.

MATERIAL RESOURCES

-Power Point projector

SHOULD COMPULSORY EDUCATION BE EXTENDED TO THE AGE OF EIGHTEEN?

One of the most interesting debates in recent months has been to extend compulsory education to the age of eighteen. And it seems that society has been divided into different camps on this issue.

In my view, extending compulsory education to eighteen is a decision that no one can take lightly. We are talking about the education of future generations and this debate cannot be decided in the basis of political. The new was made public at a very inappropriate moment. In my opinion, politicians, tried to cover the economic crisis affecting Spain and Europe. Compulsory education to eighteen? Great, but in what conditions?

If compulsory education is extended to eighteen, the administration has to provide the necessary human and material resources to carry out this project. Education today suffers a deficit of attention from administrative authorities and governments that make the current situation untenable. Extending compulsory education can not be used as a pretext to cover up the deplorable economic situation that the country is suffering, for example, number of unemployed people.

In conclusion, I define my position with a resounding “no” to the extension of the compulsory education period. There is still much work to do on what we have got.

THE HAPPY PRINCE

There was a big statue called the Happy Prince, high above the city, made of gold and sapphires and a red ruby on the sword.

All the people in the city admired it.

One night, a swallow flew near the statue. She had left her companions because she had fallen in love with a beautiful rush in the river, but finally, she decided fly again and go to Egypt to see her friends. She was very tired and decided to rest under the statue. While she was sleeping, she felt a water drop falling in her head. She looked at the clouds but the sky was clear. Another drop fell on her head and she realized that the statue of the Happy Prince was crying.

The swallow asked the prince why was he crying and he told her:

-When I was a man I never felt allowed sadness. I was living at the Unconcern Palace, where pain wasn’t permitted. I never knew what was behind the walls of my palace. Now I’m dead I can see all sad thing here in the city, on the highest column. Look there! There’s a seamstress making a dress. Her son is ill and she has nothing to give him. Please, take her my ruby.

And the swallow said:

-I can’t. My friends are waiting for me in Egypt.

-Little swallow –said the prince- please, stay here with me and be my messenger. I have to help this mother and her son

-I don’t like children- said the swallow- They throw stones at me and they don’t respect me.-

The prince was so sad that the swallow decided to stay there and help him. She extracted the ruby and flew over the city to give it to the sad mother. She saw all the sad things that the prince told him: poverty, illness…

The swallow put the ruby on the table and the little boy recovered from his illness. The swallow returned to the statue and went to sleep.

An ornithologist was surprised when he saw the swallow, because in winter they go to hot countries.

The swallow decided to return to Egypt with her friends. She saw some parrots saying that she was beautiful and she asked him: -Do you have any commissions for Egypt? And the prince said- Won’t you stay here with me? I have seen a man, here in that window, very sad because he can’t finish his play for the theatre director.

-All right- said the swallow-I’ll stay here for one more night.

The prince told the swallow to take a sapphire from his eyes and take it to the sad man so that he could buy some food and finish the play.

The swallow went there and did what the prince told him. The man was able to finish his play and felt very happy but she wanted to return to Egypt and the Happy Prince told her:

-Please, little swallow, stay with me another night.

And the swallow said him:

-I can’t. Winter is coming and I have to go. My dear, I will never forget you and next spring I will bring you a new ruby for your sword and a sapphire for your eye.

-Little swallow-said the prince- there is a little girl selling matches. Go there and help her please. She is very poor. Take my other eye and give her.

-Right-say the swallow- I’ll stay with you one more night but what are you going to do without your eyes?

And the Happy Prince told him not to worry and do what he had told her. The swallow did it and the little girl felt very happy.

The swallow returned to the statue and told the prince she would stay with him, because he had lost his eyes, but the prince said her that she must return to Egypt. But she wanted to stay. She explain him all the things she had seen when she was in Egypt. The Happy Prince said:

-This is marvelous, but what is really incredible is what people have to last: misery.

The swallow flew over the city and saw all the misery. There were two little brothers under a bridge, they were very cold, and told this to the Happy Prince. The swallow took all the gold from the statue and brought it to the children.

The winter came and the swallow couldn’t stand it. She died under the statue. Because of the cold, the statue broke and the mayor saw the dead bird at its feet and ordered to knock it down and to melt it down.

The council decided to make a new statue but all the rich people wanted to make a statue of their faces. There was a fight.

The foundry men saw that the heart could not be melted and threw away next to the dead bird.

God said to one of his angels:

-Please, give the two most beautiful things in the city.

The angel brought Him the heart of the Happy Prince and the dead bird, and God said:

-You have chosen the two most precious things. I’ll put them in my Paradise garden. This bird will sing forever and the Happy Prince will sing my praises.

Here you've got the audio I made about the Happy Prince tale. Hope you like it!

There's a cartoon film about The Happy Prince. It would be interesting to watch it compare it with the text.

A TRICK OF THE TWITS

The toothpaste foam and the peppermint shampoo.

The next day, to pay Mrs Twit back for the wormy spaghetti, Mr Twit had a great idea. He thought that he could put her shampoo in her toothpaste and her toothpaste in her shampoo. So, at night, when Mrs Twit was sleeping, silently, he went to the bathroom and put the shampoo in an empty glass, and did the same with the toothpaste. Then, he cleaned the tube of the toothpaste and the shampoo bottle and changed its content.

At nine o’clock, the alarm rang and Mrs Twit got up and went to the bathroom to have a shower. Mr Twit said her:

-Oh, my dear, I’m going to prepare you a fantastic breakfast. Have a shower and when you finish I’ll be downstairs, at the kitchen, with your smelly coffee and your fried eggs made with all my love.

-Great! Oh darling, why are you so lovely today?

-My sweety love, I love you very much. That’s it!

Then, Mrs Twit went to the bathroom to have a shower and Mr Twit to the kitchen, to prepare her breakfast.

While Mrs Twit was lathering her hair, he smelled something strange in her shampoo. It was a minty smell. She didn’t care and continued lathering her hair. When she finished, she went downstairs to have a breakfast, a fantastic breakfast prepared by her lovely husband.

When she arrived to the kitchen, her husband told her:

-Oh my lovely sweety teddy bear, you smell like mint! You’re like a beautiful peppermint plant! - and he started laughing.

Mrs. Twit didn’t pay attention to his comment, because she was surprised about the fantastic breakfast he had prepared.

They had breakfast, enjoying the moment, reading the newspaper. When they finished, Mr Twits said her:

-Darling, go upstairs, to the bathroom and brush your teeth. I think you’ve got something between your teeth.

Then, she went to the bathroom and she put the toothpaste on the toothbrush and…

-Mr Twit! What have you done?! This is my shampoo!

And Mr Twit started laughing lying on the floor.
